Mount Kenya Trust

The Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust provided funding towards Mount Kenya Trust’s Adolescence Reproductive Health and Education project in 2024. The Meru County region in Central Mount Kenya has one of the highest rates of ‘the triple threat’ in Kenya – teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and HIV infections – with 15,000 girls aged 10-19 dropping out of school in 6 months due to teenage pregnancies.

Mount Kenya Trust delivers holistic community programmes which encourage collective responsibility for protecting and conserving forest, water and wildlife. The adolescent project targets young people facing challenges in accessing quality sexual reproductive health information, education, and services. The charity also delivers women-led and school tree nurseries, planting over 1 million trees since the charity started.

“Reproductive health care is a fundamental human right, yet adolescents in Meru County, severely impacted by limited education, rural isolation, and poverty, often lack access to these essential services.”

The funding will contribute to providing sexual and reproductive health advice, information, and guidance to over 5,000 students this year, reducing teenage pregnancies and school dropouts by 50% while supporting the reintegration of teenage mothers back to school through counselling.
